Bike San Juan Island
San Juan Island is a bicycling paradise, with miles of quiet country roads, only a few big hills and a
population used to slowing down and giving a wide berth. Almost anyone can easily cycle the whole
island, so if you’re worried about getting your car on and off the ferry, consider leaving it behind in
favor of simpler transportation.
Bike Rental
- Paul Ahart operates a small, friendly, yet very complete bicycle shop called Island Bicycles
in downtown Friday Harbor. If you want to rent, call ahead at 360-378-4941. If you need
a spare part or a repair on-island, he can help.
Books
- For the very best biking information, including three dimensional route maps, try “Touring
the Islands” by Peter Powers and Rene Travis. It is available for $12.95 at most regional
bookstores or by calling (800) 364-1679.
Moped Rental
- If you’re not ready to tackle the island by bike, moped rental is a great alternative. Susie’s
Mopeds offers a great range, including a very popular two-person scoot-car with side-by-side
seating, traditional mopeds and convertible cars by the hour or day.
Bike Tours
- Excellent multi-sport tours combining biking and kayaking, some staying overnight at
Bird Rock Hotel of Friday Harbor, are offered through TerraTrek.
Bike Resources
- Information about a variety of trails, including bike routes, is available from the San Juan Island
Trails Committee at: www.sanjuanislandtrails.org.
- Island riding and safety tips are provided by the San Juan County Public Works “Bike Smart”
program at: www.co.san-juan.wa.us.
